Free training for Surrey schools and colleges into identifying and supporting young carers

There's at least two young carers in every Surrey classroom. We offer free training to school staff to help you better identify and support this vulnerable group.

Free training for school staff 

Our expert Surrey Young Carers team runs free online training sessions and network meetings via Microsoft Teams for anyone working in a Surrey school who’d like to learn more about identifying and supporting young carers.

We run four different training opportunities for Surrey Schools:

  • Young Carer Awareness Training
  • Young Carer Awareness Training – Bitesize refresher
  • Young Carer Network Meetings
  • Angel Award Focus Meetings

Surrey Schools Young Carer Awareness Training

Length 1 hour: Our expert team will explore: who young carers are; the challenges they face; why early identification in schools is vital; how to provide effective support; the Angel Award framework for schools; the strengths and resilience of young carers; and the support available through Action for Carers. The session will also include a Q&A session.

Participation contributes to achieving Standard Two of the Angel Award, and all attendees will receive a certificate.

This session is ideal for any staff member in a Surrey school looking to enhance their understanding and support of young carers.

Surrey Schools Young Carer Awareness Training— bitesize refresher

Length 45 minutes: Perfect for staff who have completed the full session and would like a refresher, or for schools renewing their Angel Award. Also ideal for staff who want a quick overview but can’t commit to the full-length session.

Surrey Schools Young Carer Network Meeting

Length 45 minutes: Meet with other school staff supporting young carers to share ideas and best practice, ask questions and build your network in these supportive and informal termly sessions facilitated by expert staff from the young carer team at Action for Carers. Each session includes a talk from a guest speaker.

Surrey Schools Angel Award Focus Meeting

Length 45 minutes: These supportive and informal termly sessions are perfect for young carer champions within schools who are working towards, considering working towards, or renewing their Angel Award – Action for Carers accreditation scheme for schools which demonstrates best practice in young carers’ support.

Each session focuses on one of the Award standards and is facilitated by expert staff from the young carer team at Action for Carers. and will include tips, ideas and examples of best practice, as well as opportunities for discussion and asking questions.

School Census Changes

Since 2023, young carers are now included in the School Census Return. Accurate identification helps monitor attendance and attainment, ensuring young carers get the recognition and support they need.
